Locally Grown

Meijer has purchased from local growers big and small since we opened our first store in 1934 in Greenville, Mich. At the time, farmer Ralph Miedema delivered cabbage and squash directly to Hendrik Meijer. Our relationship with E. Miedema & Sons, Inc., a fourth generation family farm in Byron Center, Mich., continues today.

Meijer works with more than 125 local growers, and is one of the largest purchasers of fruits and vegetables in the six Midwest states where we operate. Those relationships put nearly $100 million back into the local economy each year while guaranteeing a secure supply of the locally-grown products that our customers want and deserve.

By purchasing local, we’re able to cut fuel consumption, which is not only good for the environment, but also helps reduce transportation costs and keeps fresh produce prices down for our customers.

To guarantee quality and local variety, we continue to explore new relationships with local farmers and suppliers. In 2013, we introduced our customers to fresh, vine-ripened, Michigan-grown tomatoes year-round, supplied by Mastronardi Produce’s state-of-the-art hydroponic greenhouse in Coldwater, Mich. That partnership expanded in 2015 to now offer locally-grown sweet peppers in colder months.

“Buying local is important to us because many of our friends and neighbors see our produce in our fields and wish to purchase it. They like to support us,” said Ralph’s grandson, Dave Miedema, who now operates the 1,500-acre farm with several family members.
