From toy drives to donations, the holidays are full of examples of people helping people. Meijer is involved in many local events during the holiday season both in and outside of our stores.
Meijer partners with hundreds of local heroes — law enforcement agencies, local dignitaries and nonprofit organizations — to host Shop with a Hero and Toys for Tots holiday shopping events to benefit children who may otherwise go without.
We are proud to support these heart-warming events, during which children are paired with the heroes to shop the aisles of Meijer stores for holiday gifts for themselves and their families. Often, they spend their entire gift card on surprises for others, or even food to bring home.
For the second holiday season, Meijer has partnered with Hormel Foods to donate hams to food banks across the Midwest. Most recently, that partnership resulted in the donation of 2,250 hams to Feeding America West Michigan. Gov. Gretchen Whitmer attended the donation presentation to show her support of businesses supporting local communities. In turn, the food bank distributed those hams to food pantries in their network to ensure hungry families had a nice holiday meal.
Additionally, during the holiday season, Meijer partners with a variety of community organizations, such as Make-A-Wish Michigan and the Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital in Grand Rapids to donate nearly two dozen toy baskets to help make the holidays a little brighter for children.
For the second consecutive year, Meijer hosted holiday parties at the Cleveland Clinic and University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children's Hospital to bring extra holiday cheer to the dozens of children staying at the hospitals for treatment over Christmas and their families. Each child got to pick a toy courtesy of Meijer, enjoy crafts and meet special guests, including Santa, the Cleveland Indians’ mascot, Slider, Elsa from Frozen, and a Harlem Globetrotter.
Another way we make the season brighter is during our annual Very Merry Meijer event. Meijer played Santa and surprised an unsuspecting customer at every one of our stores – in just one day – with a $1,000 shopping spree to help make the holidays a little brighter. It’s the sixth annual event that has become a beloved tradition for the Meijer family and Meijer store directors.
